Knoppix Linux 5.3.1 Live (DVD) £5.99

This is so cool! This is a complete linux operating system that boots up and runs from this CD Disc. Nothing is copied to your hard drive and no installation is neccessary! Just plug it in and turn it on! It detects and autoconfigures itself for your particular hardware and is very good at supporting most hardware with no further hassle. It can also be installed to a hard drive as a permanent linux system.

What is KNOPPIX ® ?

KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 9 GB of executable software installed on it.

What software is installed on the KNOPPIX-CD?

The following "Highlights" are available in version 4.0.1 DVD of this Debian-based ( www.debian.org ) CD:

  • Main features of the Knoppix 4.0.1 DVD
  • Kernel 2.6.12(.4)
  • KDE 3.4.1 including all languages from Debian/experimental, and Gnome 2.8 as alternative,
  • OpenOffice 2.0 Beta (Build 104) in english and german,
  • KOffice 1.3.5,
  • Abiword 2.2.7 and Gnumeric 1.5.1,
  • Books: Updated Editions of "Knoppix Kompakt" by Rainer Hattenhauer (german) und "Knowing Knoppix" by Phil Jones (english), also the Open Source Jahrbuch
  • 2005 "light" in german language, all books in PDF,
  • Software distribution system m23
  • over 9 Gigabytes of live software from Debian, based on Sarge,
  • many updates and bugfixes (for example, floppyconfig, knoppix-installer),
  • many programming languages, development tools and IDEs for QT (kdevelop3), Java (GCJ, eclipse) and .NET (mono),
  • graphics of version 4.0.1 designed by newthinking networks.
  • Also: A free (GPL) NTFS write support is currently under development. Experimental-oriented developers may find the corresponding tools and instructions for accessing rw-mounts of NTFS-Partitions, on the DVD (use at your own risk).

What are the minimum system requirements?

  • Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later),
  • 20 MB of RAM for text mode, at least 96 MB for graphics mode with KDE (at least 128 MB of RAM is recommended to use the various office products),
  • bootable CD-ROM drive, or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI),
  • standard SVGA-compatible graphics card,
  • serial or PS/2 standard mouse or IMPS/2-compatible USB-mouse.

How is KNOPPIX started?

To start the CD, set up the BIOS of your computer to boot off the CD, put the CD in the drive, and power up the computer. If your computer doesn't support this option, you have to use a boot disk. You can create this disk from the image in KNOPPIX/boot.img on the CD. With the KNOPPIX-terminalserver (available from version 3.2 and later), KNOPPIX can also be booted over the network from a computer already running the CD.
